The 1970 Declaration on Principles of International Law Concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations included the principle, which had subsequently found confirmation in many international documents, that the right to self-determination should not be understood as authorizing or promoting any action aimed at destroying or damaging the territorial integrity or political unity of sovereign and independent States that acted in accordance with the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, and were therefore possessed of a Government representing the whole people belonging to the territory without distinction as to race, creed or colour.
